Environmental awards

The Blue Flag award is an internationally recognised award which recognises excellent environmental management of beaches and marinas.

It was born in France in 1985 with criteria focusing on bathing water quality. Since then, the scheme has expanded. In 2005, 2472 beaches and 635 marinas were awarded the Blue Flag. globally. The criteria has also evolved. There are now 29 criteria covering:

  1. Environmental Education and Information
  2. Water Quality
  3. Environmental Management
  4. Safety and Services

In 2005, Westmeath was allocated 4 Blue Flag awards. 2 marinas were included, namely Athlone Marina and Killinure Point Marina in Glasson. In addition, Lilliput at Lough Ennell and The Cut at Lough Lene also received Blue Flag status.
