© Ann HennesseyThe Shannon One Design class, over one hundred of which have been built for the Shannon lakes, still continues to race. Junior sailing was introduced into Lough Ree Yacht Club in 1968 in the form of a dozen Optimist dinghies, and this fleet has expanded and thrived.
In recent years the club has acquired more property and greatly improved both the clubhouse and the marina facilities. In recent years the 420 racing dinghy was introduced to the Club to complement the existing Laser and Mirror fleets.
Two hundred and thirty five years after it was first founded Lough Ree Yacht Club continues to play an important part in the sporting life of Athlone. The club has been provided a platform for the training of local sailors who have gone on to achieve national and international awards.
