There are several published mid-nineteenth century accounts of regattas on Lough Ree to be found one such is by W.F. Wakeman, who in his Three days on the Shannon, from Limerick to Lough Key published in 1852 states:

In August of each year, for a considerable time past, a regatta has been held upon Lough Ree. Hither flock the fashion and beauty of the district for miles around; and once more a fleet enlivens the aspect of the usually deserted lake. Gay vessels decorated with many-coloured streamers, accompanied by bands of music, and laden with gentlest ladies and gallant gentlemen glide tranquilly over the scene of many a well-contested battle.

Another rich source of information on regattas is the contemporary newspaper accounts from Victorian times. At that time there was a great surge of interest in sailing with personnel from the garrison in Athlone often to the fore. Apart from regattas there were other sailing contests and cruises organised and members from the Yacht Club participated in regattas on Lough Derg and elsewhere.
