The French have come!
The French, led by General Humbert, finally arrived in August, at Killala. Despite some successes, most notably 'The Races of Castlebar' where the government forces fled in panic, this small expeditionary force surrendered after a token show of resistance at the Battle of Ballinmuck on 8 September. Many of the Irish rebels who joined them were cut down or executed, while the French, as prisoners of war, were brought to Dublin and entertained before being sent home. Later that month Napper Tandy and a small force landed on Rutland Island in Donegal. When they discovered that Humbert had surrendered they returned to France.
