(c) National Park & Wildlife ServiceWalking is a popular activity in Ireland drawing town and city dwellers to the hills, mountains and rugged coasts of the island. Many foreign visitors and tourists experience the Irish landscape on specially themed walking holidays.
Hillwalkers can follow routes that can take several days and stay overnight in local accomodation. Popular areas for walks are the North-West, Connermara, the Burren, West Cork and Wicklow.
National parks are under the protection of the National Parks & Wildlife Service and are well known for natural beauty and wildlife. Other forestry and nature areas are managed by Coillte with visitor facilities and signposted walks.
Walking is all-year around but weather conditions can change quickly. Walks are usually graded according to difficulty and walkers are advised to prepare in advance, bring proper clothing, equipment and maps and give consideration to landowners.
