(c) Ciaran ClissmannCarrauntoohil (Corrán Tuathail) is the tallest peak in the McGillycuddy Reeks mountain range of Co. Kerry at 1,038 metres (3,406 ft) and is the highest peak on the island of Ireland .
The summit is usually ascended in a north-easterly direction, through the Hag's Glen and by climbing the Devil's Ladder to the saddle between Carrauntoohil and Knocknapeasta (Cnoc na Peiste) before turning in a north-westerly direction for the peak.
Due to the increasing volumes of people climbing Carrauntoohil, the path has become hazardous as a result of erosion.
An alternative route is the Coomloughra Horseshoe which includes Ireland’s three highest summits. The narrow Beenkeeragh Ridge on the approach to the summit is not advisable in poor weather.
