Decoration

Newgrange contains some of the earliest form of art. The entrance stone and Kerbstone no.52 are highly decorated with abstract designs in relief. These zig zags, spirals, triskeles, lozenges and chevrons were carved into the rock's surface using a stone chisel and a stone hammer. Inside the passage, the 19th Orthostat on the left hand side is decorated and the famous triskele (triple spiral) appears in the main chamber. There is much speculation about the meaning of these shapes. Some believe that they are just decoration, while others think they must have had a symbolic function or meaning, which has been lost.
What do you think?

The triskele has now become a symbol of Ireland.
Can you name any other symbols of Ireland?
