Coral reefs are one of the prettiest, most exotic-looking habitats of the world’s oceans. There are warm water coral reefs and cold water coral reefs. One of the most famous shallow water coral reefs in the world is the Great Barrier Reef, off the northeast coast of Australia. You may think it is a very old reef at 500,000 years old, but the first coral reefs of the world began about 500 million years ago!

Don’t worry, you don’t have to go all the way to Australia to see a coral reef - cold water coral reefs have been discovered off the west coast of Ireland! There are forty coral hills and some of them are as high as 100 metres. The only problem is that they are in very deep water.
