In 1714 Christopher Meldon ran a 'hedge' school in Baldoyle near Raheny. Because of penal laws, he was later imprisoned in Kilmainham for running his school.
This is a drawing of a lesson at an old Hedge School. Classes were sometimes held outdoors in the shade of a hedge. This is why they became known as 'Hedge Schools'.
