Extreme Weather
It is widely predicted that as the effects of climate change progress, there will be an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events (e.g. droughts, flood events, snowfall, high winds). This has already been experienced to some degree over the last decade in Ireland, with a number of flood events damaging property and land in several parts of Ireland.
In the future, greater consideration will need to be given when siting and designing new residential, commercial, and industrial developments. For example, construction siting should locate away from river floodplains or provide appropriate flood alleviation works. It may also mean that areas not currently prone to flooding may be at greater risk of experiencing a flood event in the future.
Such changes are likely to have a knock on effect for the construction industry, planners, architects, developers, insurers and homeowners: consequently, the time to change is now.
