Lough Ennell is a shallow limestone lake which is rich in its range of plants due to the different conditions along the shore.

Certain patches of the shoreline are marshy and sustain plants such as marsh-marigold, brook week, and lesser water plantain.

Other parts of the shore promote the growth of reedbeds and species common to swamp vegetation. A species of blue green alga occurs in Lough Ennell, this has not been recorded elsewhere in Ireland.

Important bird populations such of Cormorant, Mute Swan, Pochard, Tufted Duck and Coot have been recorded at Lough Ennell. Lough Ennell is a highly productive lake and provides important refuge for wild fowl and supports a diverse flora.
