Islands

The six-inch map of the Ballymore area, published in 1838, shows four named islands in 'Lough Sunderlin'.

• Big Island (oileán mór). In the townland of Lugacaha, O'Donovan recorded a local tradition that there was a roadway underwater leading to the island, and that the town was originally in the lake. He speculated that there could have been a crannog there 'in olden times'. It is probable that Murchadh Ua Macleachlainn's death, recounted in the Annals of the Four Masters, for 1034 occurred there (see above). In 1838, the island had forest.

• Corran Island. According to the Ordnance Survey name book, a 'corrán' is a reaping hook and the island is that shape.

• Green Island, in Mullaghcloe townland.

• Sallow Island. Oileán na saileach or 'island of the sallows'.
