Kathy Rodgers
Kathy Rodgers lives in Longford town. Prior to this year she has had articles published in various local publications including local newspapers, in particular the Longford Leader's "New Writing Page" and Heartland. She also wrote the final chapter of Goldsmith's Ghost, a novel which involved ten writers from three different counties (Longford, Westmeath and Roscommon) published in 2002. She is also a member of the Longford Writers group and has acknowledged their support over the years.
Her life was to change with the publication of her first novel by Poolbeg and its appearance on the bestsellers list. This came from an idea in her own words of:
A married woman with a boring routine life having some fun. There were times when I loved escaping into the world of my novel; it was more fun than real life; other times I wanted to pull my hair out because I would read over it and think it was rubbish.
Her perseverance paid off however. Together with the help of Paul Perry, the writer-in-residence at Longford Library who, among other things, advised her on improving her work, contacting publishers and agents, getting publicity and submitting her manuscript. Poolbeg accepted her full novel and Misbehaving was published in 2003. She was also offered a three book deal.
Put simply her novel looks at how true love triumphs despite temptations to stray and takes a sensitive look at a woman in a seemingly happy marriage whose calm lifestyle is wrecked by the reappearance of a great love from her past. Her style is chatty and very easy to read, but the plot has many twists and unlike other novels of this type is written in such a way that it is never depressing, unreal or immoral.
At the moment Kathy is working on her second novel, Boomerang. Hopefully it will join Misbehaving on the bestsellers list and help establish Kathy as a successful author of mainstream fiction.
