Green Building, Vesey Park

Griffeen Valley, Lucan, Co. Dublin

In 2006, a small building in a local park adjacent to Lucan Village was built to house a cleaning machine. The building is situated in Vesey Park, an 8 acre park which also includes an integrated constructed wetland, using plants to cleanse the water from the N4. The building was designed to have minimum impact on the environment. The two storey structure incorporates ecological and sustainability principles in its design.

The building has a green roof of planted sedum, which absorbs rainwater and creates a habitat for wildlife. Climbers have been planted around the building which will eventually cover the walls. 4 large panels known as insect hotels have been built into the walls of the building. The panels mimic natural insect habitats and encourage insects to colonise them. There are also nesting boxes for birds and bat boxes incorporated into the building. Another sustainable feature of the building is its rainwater harvesting system. This provides water for flushing the toilet in the building.
