An introduction to the history and cultural heritage of County Mayo through image, sound and video.

This website has been created as one of 5 pilot digitisation projects, funded by The Department of the Environment and Local Government and administered by An Chomhairle Leabharlanna.

About

Mayo County Library undertook a pilot project to investigate the best practice for the digitisation of image, audio and video material as part of Phase One of the Ask About Ireland and the Cultural Heritage Project, which supported five such projects in the digitisation of particular types of media (newspapers, 3D material, maps, etc.).

The pilot project was undertaken in order to establish guidelines, recommendations and procedures for the digitisation and online publication of image, audio and video material held in Mayo County Library.

Aims

· To establish guidelines, recommendations and procedures for the digitisation and online publication of material held in Mayo County Library.

· To build up a centre of expertise in the field of digitisation, and to be ready to share this expertise to assist other cultural organisations in future digitisation initiatives.

To do this the project team had to

• Select material - image, audio & video - to be digitised
• Investigate copyright status and obtain copyright where required
• Determine the digitisation requirements of the material to be digitised
• Digitise the selected material
• Create metadata records for the digitised files
• Archive digitised files
• Prepare files for web publication and publish to Cultural Heritage website
