Evictions June 1848
The Telegraph or Connaught Ranger (later renamed The Connaught Telegraph) newspaper commenced publication in Castlebar on Saint Patrick's Day 1828.
The first proprietor was Lord Frederick Cavendish, son of the Duke of Devonshire. Cavendish had great sympathy for the plight of the lower classes and used his newspaper to expose the excesses of landlords and the failures and negligence of the administrators of government.
Here we reproduce an extract from the issue of June 21st 1848 which gives a list of some evictions on Lord Lucan's estate at Castlebar.
