The Lucan Estate 1852

Sir Francis Bond Head (1793-1875) served in the British military and later as Lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada.

In 1837 he put down an insurrection there with such severity that necessitated his retirement. He took up journalism and travelling which resulted in a number of books on the subject.

In late summer of 1852 Sir Francis journeyed to Ireland for the first time and spent a fortnight visiting various parts of the country.

His account of that journey is recorded in "A Fortnight in Ireland", published by John Murray in the same year.

Here we reproduce the portion of this work relating to County Mayo and the Third Earl of Lucan.
