17th Century
The pupils are presented with a timeline stating what part of the century we will be concentrating on.
Patrick Drake ran a school in Raheny.
Pupils are presented with information about a school run by Patrick Drake. An account from Archbishop Buckley's visitation 1630, states that there exists one "Patrick Drake, a popish Schoolmaster, to whom the children thereabouts go to school." There is little surviving historical evidence relating to schools in 17th century Raheny and Section 1 presents no other information.
The pupils should be afforded opportunities to speculate and discuss why little is known about Raheny in the 17th century. The aim of this type of discussion would be to address a key issue associated with history and using evidence, namely the impact that lack of or limited evidence has on our knowledge of the past.
