"There is a sense in which every place has two geographies. The first is the familiar geography which we all learned at school. This is the world of flat maps with such old fashioned geography, one is always outside a certain place. There is a second type of geography which is harder to define. Each place contains its own version. It is an inner geography which is formed over a long period. It is a map shaped by memory cultural and experience. It is a sense of the life lived in a particular area and of the way that life is expressed".
