Dartery Forest

Dartrey Forest is managed by Coillte as a commercial forest, although it was once part of the Dartrey Estate which was owned by the Dawson Family (1866-1933). Located near Cootehill, a stunning landscape is created by a series of lakes, joined by the Dromore River, that intertwine with the characteristic Monaghan drumlins upon which Dartrey Forest is set.

Some of the oldest trees at Dartrey are located on Black Island, where a grove of 200-year-old oak and beech trees grow. The forest is very rich in biodiversity, and is especially noteworthy for the population of Ireland’s native Red Squirrel, which is an endangered species. The areas surrounding the lakes support a wide variety of waterfowl, such as herons, water hens, swans and ducks.

Dartery Heritage

Black Island, a large island between the lakes, is home to a model of the Pantheon in Rome. Designed by James Wyatt in 1770, it is building of significant architectural value. Although it has fallen into disrepair over the years, a restoration fund has been granted to begin repairs. A 52 ft high Corinthian column, also designed by James Wyatt, was also erected in Dartery Forest in 1810.

There are also a number of traditional crannógs on the lakes, and the perimeter of Dartery Forest is largely bordered by a ‘famine wall’ built in 1846.
