Carlow County LibraryNioclás Tóibín was born in Baile na nGall in the Ring area of County Waterford in November 1890. He was educated locally and received his secondary education in the recently established Coláiste na Rinne. He taught as a National Teacher. He worked for Conradh na Gaeilge from 1915-1922 and married in 1922.
Bishop Foley invited Nioclás Tóibín to teach in Carlow. He moved to Carlow but instead concentrated on his writing skills. During that period he wrote "Róisín Bán an tSléibhe" [1923], "Oíche ar bharr toinne", "An Dubh ina Gheal", "Teoiní agus Tighthe Lóistín all in 1924. Nioclás Tóibín also wrote short works for school children.
He worked for County Carlow Vocational Education Committee from 1923-1934. His declining health forced him to abandon teaching in favour of his writing career. He worked on many translations of classical and contemporary authors. His first working translation was of "Fir Taístil" by Dowsley. He also translated works by Michael O'Hanrahan, Myles Byrne, T.C. Murray and Gerald Griffin among others. He also made broadcasts on Radio Éireann and wrote articles for Irish magazines.
Nioclás Tóibín and his wife left Carlow in 1935. They settled initially in Bray and later in Monkstown, Co. Dublin. He died in 1966.
Rugadh Nioclás Tóibín i mBaile na nGall sa Rinn, Co. Phortláirge i Samhain 1890. Fuair sé oideachas i mbunscoil na Rinne agus meánoideachas i gColáiste na Rinne. Ina dhiaidh sin chuaigh sé ag múineadh i scoil náisiúnta. Ó 1915 go 1922 bhí sé ag obair do Chonradh na Gaeilge. Phós Nioclás Tóibín sa bhliain 1922.
Bhí an tEaspag Ó Foghlú i gCeatharlach ag an am sin, agus thug sé cuireadh don Tóibíneach dul a mhúineadh ann.Chuaigh Nioclás go Ceatharlach ach bhí sé ag brath ar an scríobhneoireacht ar fuid na hama sin. Chuir sé amach "Róisín bán an tSléibhe" i 1923. Ina dhiaidh sin scríobh sé "Oíche ar bharr tuinne" (1924), "An Dubh ina Gheal" i 1924 chomh maith agus "Teoiní agus Tighthe Lóistín". Scríobh Nioclás Tóibín leabhair bheaga do pháistí scoile fresin.
Bhí sé ag obair faoin gCoiste Gairmoideachais i gCeatharlach Ó 1923 go 1934. Ní raibh an sláinte go ró mhaith aige ó 1929 amach. Bhí sé ag obair go dian leis an scríobhneoireacht áfach. Dhein sé aistriúcháin don Ghúm ar leabhair éagsúla, mar shampla "Fir Taistil" le Dowsley. D'aistrigh sé leabhair le Michael O'Hanrahan, Myles Byrne, T.C. Murray agus Gerald Griffin agus le húdair eile freisin. Dhein sé craolta do Radio Éireann agus scríobh sé do hirisí chomh maith.
