UNESCO Geopark
In September 2008, the Marble Arch Caves Geopark in Co. Fermanagh was extended to include selected sites in Co. Cavan. This newly extended Geopark is overseen by a joint committee of the Fermanagh and Cavan County Councils.
A Geopark is an area recognised by UNESCO to have an extraordinary geological heritage. Blanket bogs, glacial erratics and the numerous lakes that fill the Cavan landscape, many of which formed over glacial valleys, are some of the features included in the new extended area of the Geopark.
The Geopark area stretches from Co. Fermanagh over the Cuilcagh Mountains and into Co. Cavan.
Footpath to summit of Lough an Lea
A footpath leading to the summit of Lough an Lea. The loose stones that can be seen at the top of the mountain make up a "cairn". Cairns are piles of stones which were erected by people in the past for a number of reasons. Two common uses were to indicate a burial spot or the highest point on a mountain.
