Puffin Island
Puffin Island is a protected seabird colony close to Valentia. The island is full of commotion, not only from the substantial population of striking puffins, but from the calls of thousands of Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Guillemots as the feed, squabble over territory and nest along the cliff-faces.
The island is dominated by large populations of Puffins, Storm Petrels and Manx Shearwaters. There are over 5,000 pairs of the attractive, most striking Puffin species, making the island the largest Puffin colony in Ireland. However, according to the Seabird 2,000 survey, the island is dominated by Manx Shearwaters and boasts a total of 6,329 pairs.
Fulmar, Gull, Razorbill, Shag, Chough and Kittiwake are among the other species that can be observed on Puffin Island.
